January Member Spotlight- Cathy Reynolds, Development Associate, Iowa Legal Aid
Describe what you do in one sentence: I primarily conduct research on funding opportunities and write grant applications for Iowa Legal Aid’s ten regional offices, which are located strategically across the state.
Describe what you enjoy most about being a member of the Central Iowa Grants Professional Association: The Central Iowa Grants Professional Association has helped me grow in my profession in ways I never thought possible. There is so much more to grant writing than just filling out an application. There are collaborations and partnerships to build, wrong and right ways to complete a budget, and the expertise of other professionals to tap in to – just to name a few. The GPA helps me with all of these.
What do you love about your job? It is often said that grant writers are introverts. This would be true of me. Grant writing allows me to express myself in creative ways. And what is more exciting than to receive a grant that you worked very hard for and spent a lot of time on!
Favorite vacation you’ve ever had? While I can’t say that it is my “favorite” vacation of all time, I absolutely loved the annual GPA meeting that was held in San Diego last year. I lived in San Diego for nearly four years and it was great to go to all the places I used to go. The accommodations were wonderful and the information I received from other grant writers across the nation was so valuable!
What are your hobbies? My husband and I own and operate a horse boarding stable. I love taking care of the horses and, even more, trail riding. There is nothing more relaxing to me than being on a trail, in a forest, on the back of a horse.
What are you passionate about and why? I am a born again, spirit-filled Christian which keeps me grounded. I am passionate about showing the love of Christ to everyone!
